Police Arrest More Suspects Over In A/Ibom Kidnap Attempt

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested two additional suspects linked to a recent failed kidnapping attempt in the Eket Local Government Area of the state.
DSP Timfon John, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, disclosed this in a statement issued to journalists in Uyo on Monday.
According to her, the suspects were arrested during a joint police operation around 1:00 a.m. on Friday, August 22.
“One of the suspects, popularly known by his aliases Igbo Man and Mami, is a resident of Uqua Isi Edoho, Esit Eket Local Government Area. He was identified by an earlier arrested suspect as the mastermind of the failed kidnap attempt,” John said.
She added that the suspect had confessed to being a member of the gang that kidnapped two top businessmen in Eket and had also been linked to several other kidnapping incidents in the area.
The second suspect, a resident of Okorotip, Ibeno Local Government Area, was said to be the boat operator who ferried the criminals and their victims to the creek.
“Both suspects have been taken into custody for further investigation,” the PPRO stated.
John assured residents that the command is intensifying efforts to apprehend other gang members mentioned during interrogations.
“The police command will continue to work tirelessly to dismantle criminal networks in Akwa Ibom and ensure the safety and security of all residents,” she said.
THE WHISTLER reports that operatives of the command had earlier foiled a kidnap attempt on August 22, which led to the arrest of two suspects.
Meanwhile, between January and August 2025, no fewer than 11 suspected kidnappers have been arrested in Eket by the police.
