Operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have arrested a 42-year-old man, Victor Okoh, in connection with the gruesome murder of his 38-year-old wife, Victoria Okoh, at their residence in Oron Local Government Area of the state.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, confirmed the arrest in a statement in Uyo on Monday.

John said the arrest was made following a distress call by concerned residents of the area.

The police spokesperson stated that the operatives stormed the building at about 5 am and arrested the suspect, who was hiding under the ceiling to evade arrest.

He added that further investigation revealed that he matcheted the deceased over allegations of infidelity.

The command’s spokesperson said the body of the deceased has been deposited at the general hospital’s morgue in Oron LGA for autopsy while an investigation is still ongoing.

The statement reads in part, “At about 05:20 hrs, operatives of the command swiftly responded to a distress call from concerned residents. On arrival at the scene, officers discovered the mutilated body of the deceased lying outside the house she shared with her husband.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect had allegedly attacked his wife with a machete over accusations of infidelity.

“Further reports indicated that the suspect was hiding in the ceiling of the house in an attempt to evade arrest. The operatives tactically secured the building, forced entry, and successfully apprehended him.

“The machete used in committing the crime was recovered by the police. The corpse has been deposited at the General Hospital Morgue for an autopsy, while the suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue.”

The Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare, while condemning the incident, assured the public that justice would take its full course.

The commissioner warned against all forms of domestic violence and called on residents to seek lawful means of resolving disputes rather than resorting to violence.
