The police in Lagos on Thursday arraigned two men before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing motor batteries valued at N12.7m.

The defendants – Rufai Hammed, 33, and Isaq Muhammed, 25, whose house addresses were provided – are being tried for felony and theft.

They, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor, ASP Edet Ekpo, told the Court that the defendants committed the offences on August 10, at about 2:30 a.m., in the Iyana-Era, Ijanikin area of Lagos.

Ekpo alleged that the defendants conspired among themselves to commit a felony, to wit, stealing.

“The defendants stole 174 cartons of Tiger head super batteries from a stationary truck with registration number XZ 118 KJA valued at N12,702,000 belonging to one Ekene Michael.

“They were arrested and handed over to the Police for prosecution.

“The offence contravened Sections 411 and 287 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos, 2015,” he said.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Nurudeen Layeni, granted the defendants bail in the sum of N500,000 each with two sureties in the like sum.

He ruled that one of the sureties must provide evidence of being an entrepreneur as part of the bail conditions.

The Magistrate adjourned the case until September 11, for mention.
