Pedula Stuns Raducanu In Miami Open Upset As Fils Defeats Zverev
Emma Raducanu suffered a shock 6-4 6-7 (3-7) 6-2 loss to America’s Jessica Pedula to crash out of the 2025 Miami Open.
The British star endured a frustrating outing on the court, recovering from a medical treatment to level in the first set.
She held a 5-2 lead and had four set points in the eighth game, before calling to see the doctor before her blood pressure was taken, and was given ice towels to cool down before resuming.
Despite the treatment, Raducanu won the second set, showing incredible mental strength but she could not maintain the run.
In the third set, Pegula rallied, going up an early break at 2-0. On her third break point, Pegula put away Raducanu’s short ball and ended the match by breaking Raducanu at love.
Raducanu posted five set points on Pegula’s serve but couldn’t convert. Pegula then held on too close to 5-4.
The American held on to victory for her third Miami Open semi-finals in four years to become the last standing player from the host nation.
Despite the defeat, It was Raducanu’s best performance in a tournament since winning the 2021 US Open.
Pegula was full of praise for Raducanu’s performance despite battling with medical problems.
She said: “It was tough. I played a good first set, a little let down in the second, got it back, went up 2-0 in the tie-break, but it kind of flipped.
“She started moving the ball really well, serving good. Sometimes it just happens but I just wanted to come out in the third really strong, really quick, and just kind of jump on her and not keep the third set too close.”
Raducanu provided an update on her wellbeing after the match.
She said: “I just felt really dizzy. I felt faint. I don’t know, it was very humid out there and we have a long wait, so maybe just an accumulation, and just physical points as well and there were long rallies and heavy conditions. I don’t know how I kind of regrouped in that second set, but in the third I definitely struggled a little bit.”
Pegula will take on 19-year-old wild card Alexandra Eala in the semi-finals after she stunned world No 2 Iga Swiatek 6-2 7-5 in their quarter-final clash.
In the men’s category, 17th seed Arthur Fils produced an upset with a 3-6 6-3 6-4 win over top seed Alexander Zverev.
