PDP downplays Atiku’s resignation, says no loss to party

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has downplayed the resignation of one of its most prominent members, Atiku Abubakar as insignificant.

The party, through its Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, accused Atiku — a former vice president — of being one of the individuals behind the long-standing internal crises within the PDP.

Atiku’s announcement came as he aligned with other opposition figures under the umbrella of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to forge a united front ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In his statement, he cited the PDP’s deviation from its founding principles as the main reason for his departure.

Reacting further, Abdullahi said Atiku had a history of leaving the party and returning whenever it suited his political ambitions.

“This is not the first time he’s leaving. The party cannot revolve around one man,” he said.

He criticized what he described as a widespread perception in Nigeria — that the PDP had become a personal political vehicle for Atiku to use only when he needed it.

According to Abdullahi, “One of the problems with Nigerian politics is the notion that PDP exists for Atiku Abubakar, who only turns to it when it’s convenient for him.”

Abdullahi also questioned Atiku’s commitment to democratic values, implying that his decision to leave the PDP casts doubt on his ability to lead justly, even if he ever wins power.

“You’ll find out that some of those who benefited the most from this party are the same ones now working against it,” he added.
