Pay N70,000 Or Face Strike, Teachers Warn Kaduna Govt

The Kaduna State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has given the state government a deadline of August 2025 to implement the new N70,000 minimum wage.

If the government fails to comply, the union threatens to embark on an indefinite strike and shut down schools across the state.

Speaking to journalists on Sunday, NUT Chairman in Kaduna State, Comrade Ibrahim Dalhatu, expressed frustration over the government’s inaction, despite the presidential assent to the new minimum wage bill on July 29, 2024.

Dalhatu stated that teachers and other civil servants, particularly those on local government payrolls, are still awaiting the salary adjustment.

“We have no alternative but to commence an indefinite strike if the government fails to act.

“Our patience is wearing thin, and this is the only language they seem to understand,” he said.

The union also criticised the slow pace of staff verification, which the government claims is a prerequisite for the new salary scale.

Dalhatu questioned why the physical verification process was still pending, despite the digital screening being completed.

He noted that prompt implementation of the minimum wage is essential, and warned that failure to do so would disrupt academic activities by August.
