Parents Behind 80% Of Exam Malpractice — JAMB

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has claimed that more than 80% of examination malpractice in Nigeria is instigated by parents.

According to the Chairman of JAMB’s Special Committee on Examination Infractions, Jake Epelle, parents bear significant responsibility for the prevalence of exam malpractice in the country.

Speaking on Arise Television’s “The Morning” programme, Epelle lamented the state of Nigeria’s educational sector, noting that many children are wandering around with fraudulent certificates.

He criticised parents who complain about their children’s treatment on social media, only to find out when their claims are proven false.

Epelle’s comments come on the heels of JAMB’s recent investigation into the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), which uncovered 4,251 cases of “finger blending”, 190 instances of AI-assisted impersonation through image morphing and 1,878 false declarations of albinism.

“Parents bear significant responsibility, as 80% of examination malpractice is instigated by them. Often, these same parents who take to social media to complain about how their children are treated are being disingenuous.

“When their claims are proven false upon further investigation, they often end up begging for forgiveness privately. We must act swiftly to address this issue,” he said.

Epelle who was also in Channels Television’s “Politics Today” programme, warned that unless urgent reforms are implemented, the credibility of Nigeria’s education system could collapse further.

“Exam fraud uncovered by JAMB shows that Nigeria’s education sector is in trouble.

“If left unchecked, examination malpractice will continue to erode merit, undermine public trust, and destroy the very foundation of Nigeria’s education and human capital development,” he said.
