Panic As Fire Erupts At Lagos General Hospital
A fire erupted on Thursday at the General Hospital in Ifako-Ijaiye, Lagos, engulfing sections of the facility’s three-storey building and triggering widespread panic among patients, visitors, and nearby residents.
A video shared on social media captured thick smoke rising from the building as concerned onlookers called for immediate assistance.
A Facebook user, Modinat Melemuku, posted a video from the scene, calling for help.
“Happening now at the general hospital, Ifako Ijaiye, College Road. Please repost. Help is needed,” she wrote.
Firefighters were seen arriving at the scene to bring the fire under control.
Eyewitness accounts raised concerns that nursing mothers and newborns might be trapped inside, though no casualties had been confirmed at the time of this report.
However, reacting to the incident, the Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Mrs Margaret Adeseye, said the agency has successfully doused the fire.
According to her, the incident occurred in a nursing room on the second floor of the main three-storey building.
“The fire, which was reported at approximately 15:20 hours, was promptly responded to by teams from the Agege and Alausa fire stations and was quickly brought under control, preventing significant damage to the busy healthcare facility.
“The incident was contained to the room where it originated,” Adeseye said in a statement.
She added that normal operations have resumed, and medical services to the public have continued uninterrupted.
“No casualties were recorded. An investigation into the cause of the fire has commenced,” Adeseye said.
