Oyo Threatens To Revoke Contracts Of 20 Waste Collectors
The Oyo State Government has issued warning to waste management consultants failing to meet their contractual obligations, as they threaten sanctions against about 20 firms responsible for refuse collection.
The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Abdulmojeed Mogbonjubola, made this known on Sunday after a review meeting with the consultants in Ibadan, the state capital.
According to Mogbonjubola, the government outsourced waste collection to ensure a cleaner environment for residents.
However, he expressed disappointment that for months, some contractors had neglected their duties, leaving major streets in Ibadan littered with refuse.
“For the last two months, waste has continued to pile up on the roads with nobody coming to evacuate it. If things continue this way, we will have no option but to revoke the contracts,” the commissioner warned.
Following the worsening situation, the state launched a comprehensive review and renewal process for waste management contracts.
The assessment, which was conducted last week at the ministry’s conference room, aimed to evaluate contractors based on key performance indicators such as—operational efficiency, Financial compliance, Regulatory adherence, Innovation and sustainability and Transparency.
Mogbonjubola stressed that the review was not a witch-hunt but a necessary measure to improve service delivery and address public concerns.
“Upon completion, the ministry will decide whether to extend the contracts under revised terms or renegotiate them to improve performance,” he stated.
The commissioner reiterated the government’s commitment to modernising waste management.
He added that plans are underway to introduce smart waste bins, digital monitoring systems, and expanded recycling initiatives to enhance efficiency.
Also, Mogbonjubola urged residents to remain patient, and assured them that efforts were in place to clear the growing waste backlog across the state.
