Over 120,000 Killed In Nigeria In 8 Years—SBM

SBM Intelligence has reported that violence claimed at least 120,000 lives across Nigeria between 2015 and 2023.

The report reflects the security scorecard of the late Muhammadu Buhari administration.

In a post on X, SBM’s security indicators showed that violence alone accounted for an average of 15,000 deaths annually.

“During the Buhari administration (2015–2023), Nigeria faced a significant decline.

“Over 15,000 violent deaths occurred each year on average, and the national debt quadrupled without infrastructure growth,” the report read.

The report stated that, based on social indicators, unemployment tripled to 33.2 per cent, and 10.5 million children remained out of school.

“Socially, unemployment tripled to 33.2 per cent, healthcare deteriorated from 1 doctor per 4000 patients to 1 doctor per 9000, and 10.5 million children remained out of school as education’s share of the budget fell from 10.7 per cent to 4.95 per cent,” SBM said.

On the economic front, the report revealed that Nigeria’s GDP per capita declined by 38 per cent to $1,597 and the country experienced two recessions, first in 2016 and later in 2020.

“Inflation more than doubled to 24.66 per cent, while oil production fell 30 per cent.

“The national debt quadrupled without infrastructure growth. Despite foreign reserve growth and a 160 per cent growth in rice production, poverty deepened,” the report added.

SBM Intelligence concluded that Buhari’s legacy left “Nigeria becoming poorer, less secure, and more indebted.”

The release of the report came barely 48 hours after the official announcement of Buhari’s death in London following a prolonged illness.

He served as Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023, decades after ruling as Head of State from 1983 to 1985.
