Our sustained sensitization reason for high voter registration in Anambra – ANCISRO

The Anambra State Civic and Social Reformation Office, ANCISRO, has said its sustained sensitization of citizens is responsible for the high number of voter registration in Nigeria.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, recently released the figure of new registrants in the country, with Anambra ranking the highest.

The figures released showed that Anambra registered 168,187 new voters in just two weeks, the highest number recorded in any comparable period since 2017.

The commission said that women accounted for 58 per cent of the new registrants, while young people aged 18–34 made up more than half, reflecting a surge in civic engagement.

In contrast, other South-East states showed disappointingly low participation, particularly in the online pre-registration phase.

INEC data reveals that out of 64,696 registrations recorded across the entire zone, Anambra accounted for 62,698, leaving Abia (772), Enugu (484), Imo (481) and Ebonyi (261) with some of the lowest figures nationwide.

Managing Director of ANCISRO, Mr Chuka Nnabuife, attributed the success to sustained civic education and mobilisation by the agency.

He said: “Through initiatives such as ‘My Vote, My Duty’, town halls, school outreach, youth forums and parish sensitisation, we engaged traders, students, market women and other active groups that went on to dominate the registration numbers.

“This record registration demonstrates what is possible when citizens are encouraged and supported to see voter registration as both a right and a duty.

“We urge Ndi Anambra and indeed all our brothers and sisters across the South-East to take advantage of the ongoing INEC online voter registration exercise. The strength of our democracy depends on active participation.

“As Anambra prepares for the 8 November 2025 governorship election, ANCISRO remains committed to deepening democratic participation, strengthening public trust, and ensuring that every eligible citizen recognises the importance of registering, collecting their PVC, and turning out to vote.”
