Otti Applauded For Extending Tenure Of LG Chairmen

The former executive chairman of Ukwa East Local Government Area, Hon. Chuks Wabara has extended his profound gratitude to the Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr Alex Otti for his recent groundbreaking decision to extend the tenure of local government chairmen and councillors from two years to four years.
This significant move, according to Chief Wabara, is not only a testament to the governor’s unwavering commitment to strengthening governance at the grassroots level but also a monumental step in deepening democracy and fostering sustainable development across the state.
In a statement, Chief Wabara said for years, he has been an advocate for the extension of the local government tenure, and he has been one of the strong voices calling for the review of the short-lived two-year tenure for chairmen and councillors, which often impeded progress and led to instability at the local government level.
“During previous administrations, I raised concerns over the need for a more stable and effective leadership structure at the local level, one that would allow elected officials to fully serve the interests of their communities, initiate and complete meaningful projects, and consolidate democratic gains.
“Today, with the Governor’s bold initiative, we are witnessing a significant shift towards a more efficient and accountable local government system.
“The extension of the tenure is a crucial policy change that allows for proper planning, execution of policies, and continuity in leadership.
“It will not only enhance the productivity of local governments but will also empower local officials to do more for their people, ensuring that democracy is truly felt at the grassroots.
The People’s Democratic Party Chieftain stated that the initiative will bring about better governance, as local government officials will now have the time and stability needed to implement developmental projects and make real, lasting impacts on the lives of their constituents.
“The extension also strengthens the relationship between the people and their leaders, ensuring that democratic ideals are truly embodied in every community.
“Once again, I commend His Excellency for this historic decision and express my deep appreciation for his vision in supporting a system that works for the people of Abia State. It is moves like these that will shape the future of our democracy and make Abia a true leader in governance.”
