Osun Speaker, monarch reconcile after viral audio dispute

The Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, and a traditional ruler, the Alasi of Asi, Oba Olasunkanmi Oyewale, have reconciled.

Their reconciliation came after a public fallout that stemmed from a leaked voice note of Egbedun threatening the traditional ruler

The rift between both men became public knowledge after a voice recording surfaced online in which Egbedun, speaking with a woman believed to be the monarch’s wife, accused the royal father of aiding hoodlums who allegedly attacked him.

In the audio obtained by DAILY POST, Egbedun was also heard threatening to take action against Oba Oyewale leading to tension in the Asi community.

The Alasi of Asi also took steps by filing a petition against the Speaker at the Zone XI Police Command, Osogbo on threat to life.

Following the viral circulation of the recording, some youths in Asi staged a peaceful protest, accusing the monarch of persecuting Egbedun, who hailed from the same community.

For several days after the controversy broke, both parties remained out of the public eye, fuelling speculation about the depth of the disagreement.

However, on Thursday, Egbedun returned to Asi and was warmly received by a crowd of supporters.

Youth leader Samuel Olawoyin, who welcomed him on behalf of the community, declared that the crisis was over.

He added that the rally and the presence of community elders and chiefs signalled unity.

Olawoyin said, “We are here to welcome our leader back from his trip. As our leader (Egbedun) rightly said, there is no crisis again in the town.

“The youth, elders, and the chiefs are working together now. So, we are happy today.”

Olawoyin also affirmed that the palace had sent emissaries to the event, symbolising the end of the rift between Egbedun and Oba Oyewale.

“The chiefs are here courtesy of our royal father, Alasi of Asi, and they are here to show that the disagreement has been resolved. We are now living in harmony,” he added.

Addressing the crowd in the Yoruba language, Egbedun thanked the people for their continued support and called for calm and peace in the town.

“I am not fighting anybody and I am using this opportunity to beg the people of Asi not to protest or fight anyone. I appreciate the chiefs that are here today,” the Speaker said.

Egbedun also urged the residents to focus on development and continue supporting the administration of Governor Ademola Adeleke.
