President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, Francis Orbih

The President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, Francis Orbih has opened up on his plans for the sport in 2025 following the giant strides recorded in 2024.

Badminton has enjoyed a steady rise in the last few years with Anuoluwapo Opeyori making Nigeria proud in Africa, and the world at large.

He has dominated Africa in the men’s singles from 2019 till date, winning four African Championship titles and two African Games titles.

He also became the first Nigerian badminton player to qualify for two consecutive Olympics after featuring at Tokyo 2020, and Paris 2024.

Eniola Bolaji also made Nigeria proud in the 2024 Paralympics, where she won a bronze medal.

Orbih has promised to continue to support the athletes to ensure the development of Badminton in 2025.

He said: “In 2025, we will see more national tournaments for Nigerian badminton players. These tournaments will create more competitive platforms for our athletes, allowing them to improve their skills and prepare for international competitions. The aim is to build a stronger, more dynamic badminton community in Nigeria.

“Eniola’s bronze medal in Paris is a remarkable achievement. It is a proud moment for Nigeria and for the entire African continent. Her success is a testament to the talent and hard work of our athletes.

“Our players are excelling in their respective categories across Africa. We are on the right path, and with the organisation of more national tournaments, we will continue to strengthen the foundation of badminton in the country.”

He also revealed that the Federation is targeting a place in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

Orbih said: “One of our main objectives is to qualify more players for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. We are focused on developing our athletes and providing them with the tools they need to compete on the world stage. The upcoming tournaments will play a vital role in helping us reach this goal.

“The journey has just begun. We will continue to invest in our players, and through the planned tournaments, we are confident that Nigerian badminton will continue to grow and compete at the highest levels.”

Nigeria’s Eniola Bolaji made history by becoming the first African athlete to win a badminton medal at the 2024 Paralympic Games.
