One Dead As Jeep Collides With Commercial Bus In Lagos
A tragic road accident in the early hours of Monday has claimed the life of a driver after a high-speed collision between a Toyota Highlander Jeep and a commercial bus at the Volkswagen area, inward Mile 2, Lagos.
It was gathered that the crash occurred when the Toyota Highlander, reportedly speeding, lost control and rammed into a T4 commercial bus.
The bus was said to be illegally parked while picking up passengers along the corridor.
The impact of the collision was so severe that the driver of the Highlander died instantly.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, said officials of the agency quickly arrived at the scene to secure the area and manage the resulting traffic congestion.
The deceased’s body was extricated from the wreckage and handed over to officers of the Ojo Police Division, who later transferred it to the C-Niger Mortuary in Abule Ado for preservation.
In a coordinated effort, LASTMA officers also oversaw the removal of the accidented vehicles, which were towed to the Ojo Police Division for further investigation.
Normal traffic flow was eventually restored after the intervention.
Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased, urging motorists to avoid excessive speeding and ensure their vehicles—especially braking systems—are in optimal condition before driving.
He also issued a strong warning to commercial bus drivers against illegal roadside passenger pickups, calling for strict adherence to the use of designated bus stops as provided by the state government.
“The sanctity of human life must never be compromised by recklessness on our highways. The Lagos State Government, through LASTMA, shall continue to intensify enforcement and sustain public enlightenment campaigns to forestall preventable tragedies of this nature,” Bakare-Oki stated.
THE WHISTLER reports that at least five passengers sustained severe injuries on August 8 when a truck collided with a commercial bus at Toyota Bus Stop, inward Oshodi.
The incident occurred just one week after five people died and five others sustained serious injuries in two separate crashes that occurred along the Lekki-Epe Expressway.
