Ondo govt approves transfer of UNIMED Teaching Hospital to FUTA
The Ondo State Government has approved the transfer of the University of Medical Sciences, UNIMED, Teaching Hospital complex in Akure to the Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA.
The development paves the way for UNIMED to function as FUTA’s College of Medicine and Teaching Hospital, following President Bola Tinubu’s earlier approval for the federal university to establish the facility.
The decision was reached during the State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa in Akure.
Briefing journalists after the meeting, the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Banji Ajaka, explained that the transfer involves not only the hospital’s infrastructure but also its personnel, equipment, and liabilities.
“All employees of the Akure complex will be absorbed into FUTA Teaching Hospital under the Federal Government. This move aligns with Mr President’s directive for FUTA to establish a College of Medicine and Teaching Hospital,” Ajaka stated.
He added that the arrangement would bolster healthcare delivery in Ondo State while positioning FUTA as a premier hub for medical sciences in Nigeria.
