The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has called for unity, justice, and greater state control of resources in Nigeria, stressing that such measures are essential to ensuring equity and a sense of belonging for all citizens.

Speaking during the memorial lecture in honour of the late Niger Delta elder statesman, Chief Edwin Clark, held in Abuja on Wednesday, the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Senator John Azuta-Mbata, lauded the legacy of the departed leader, describing him as a beacon of justice and environmental advocacy.

“His life was a testament to his commitment to the struggle for justice and environmental sustainability,” Senator Mbata said.

“His unwavering determination to address the systemic underdevelopment and poverty that have plagued the region for decades is a legacy that inspires us all to continue the fight for justice, equity, and unity.”

Highlighting the importance of national cohesion, the Igbo leader reiterated that Nigeria’s diversity should be seen as a strength rather than a weakness.

However, he noted that deliberate efforts must be made to foster and maintain unity among the country’s various ethnic groups.

“Our diversity is a strength, not a weakness,” he said. “However, it requires deliberate efforts to maintain our nation’s unity.”

Senator Mbata also paid tribute to Nigeria’s past heroes, citing figures such as Chief Michael Imoudu and Alhaji Waziri Ibrahim, whose contributions he said continue to inspire the ongoing struggle for a just and equitable society.

He used the occasion to advocate for increased autonomy for Nigeria’s federating units, particularly in managing their resources. According to him, such reforms would promote fairness and regional development.

“By giving states more control over their resources, we can ensure that the benefits of resource extraction are shared equitably,” he stated.

Chief Edwin Clark, a prominent advocate for Niger Delta rights and a former federal commissioner, passed away at the age of 97.

His family has announced that he will be laid to rest on May 13.
