Ofido: MASSOB accuses Nigerian Police of intimidation, seeks international intervention

The Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, has accused the Nigerian Police of ongoing harassment and intimidation of its members, calling on international human rights bodies to intervene.

In a statement signed by its National Director of Information, Comrade Edeson Samuel, the group cited the case of Mr. Vitus Obumnaeme Ofido, the Surulere Regional Director of Mobilization in Lagos State, who was allegedly arrested and detained unlawfully by the Lagos State Police Command solely because of his affiliation with MASSOB.

According to the statement, Mr. Ofido was later acquitted by the Lagos State High Court following the intervention of civil society organizations. However, MASSOB alleged that plain-clothed officers have continued to trail him in an effort to re-arrest him, including a failed attempt at his place of business.

“This alarming trend of intimidation and threats towards MASSOB members is not an isolated incident; it reflects a broader pattern of oppression against those advocating for self-determination and human rights in Nigeria,” the group said.

MASSOB called on the International Human Rights Commission and other rights organizations to investigate and hold Nigerian security agents accountable for what it described as a violation of human rights in a democratic society.

The group reaffirmed its commitment to non-violent advocacy for the self-determination and independence of Biafra, stating that no amount of persecution would deter its struggle.
