Oborevwori, NPA Seek Delta Ports Reopening To Boost Jobs, Trade
The Delta State Government and the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) have renewed efforts to revive the state’s dormant ports as gateways for investment and job creation.
On Monday, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori met with the NPA Board of Directors at the EXCO Chambers in Asaba as part of the NPA’s nationwide port inspection tour.
During its nationwide port inspection tour, the NPA commended Delta State’s rapid growth and highlighted the strategic importance of Warri, Burutu, Sapele, and Koko ports to Nigeria’s trade.
The Delta government, in a tweet on Monday, said that the port authority identified “challenges like shallow waterways, underutilisation of Delta ports, and the need for dredging of the Warri channel in the state” during the tour.
The NPA called for the “development of a deep sea port in the Delta through public-private partnerships, stressing the potential of the Blue Economy in maritime transport, fisheries, tourism, and renewable energy.”
Governor Oborevwori reaffirmed his administration’s readiness to collaborate with the Federal Government and investors to modernise and revive Delta’s ports.
He urged urgent dredging of the Warri channel and rehabilitation of Warri and Koko facilities, describing them as critical gateways for trade, jobs, and investment.
The Governor emphasised Delta’s investor-friendly climate, citing the peaceful security environment and infrastructural renewal, including multi-billion-naira flyovers and major road projects awarded to Julius Berger.
He assured that Delta remains safe for business, with laws protecting investors and host community relations guided by a Memorandum of Understanding.
“The visit reinforced Delta State’s strategic role in national trade facilitation and deepened collaboration with the Nigerian Ports Authority,” the port said.
