Obi: Four Years Enough to Fight Corruption and Fix Nigeria

Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has reiterated his commitment to a single four-year term if elected, emphasising that transformative leadership does not require prolonged tenure.

In a statement on X Tuesday, Obi addressed the controversy surrounding his proposal, asserting that a sincere leader can achieve significant progress within 48 months.

“I still find it baffling that my decision to do a term of four years, if given the mandate to rule this country, is generating so much agitation,” Obi stated. “By this feeling, we are doubting the fact that a sincere leader can achieve much in 48 months.”

Obi distanced himself from the desperation often associated with political ambition, outlining behaviours he avoids, such as “engaging in overly aggressive rhetoric or actions to prove a point or gain attention” or “making unrealistic or unfulfillable promises to win support or approval.” He emphasized that his drive stems from a deep commitment to Nigeria’s progress, not personal gain. “What drives me is not personal ambition, but a deep commitment to see Nigeria work. And if the sacrifice required of me is four years of sincere, accountable leadership, so be it,” he said.

Reflecting on his political record, Obi challenged critics to investigate his past, asserting his clean history in electoral conduct. “Throughout my political journey, I have never been involved in thuggery, the snatching of ballot boxes, or any form of electoral malpractice,” he declared. “I challenge anyone: conduct your investigations. You will find no stains of rigging or violence associated with my name. I have always chosen the path of peace, principle, and civility.”

The former Anambra State Governor highlighted his belief in fair competition, noting that opponents who contested against him were never denied their rights, framed, or coerced into excessive campaign spending. “Ask those who have contested against me—none were ever denied their rights, framed, or falsely accused,” he said.

Outlining his vision for a four-year term, Obi proposed tackling corruption head-on and redirecting resources to critical sectors like education, healthcare, and infrastructure. He criticized extravagant government spending, such as the acquisition of new presidential jets, as misallocated funds that could address pressing national needs. “In four years, we can confront corruption head-on, redirecting resources to priority areas,” he said. “Within the same period, we ensure that the rule is sacrosanct and the rule of law is strictly followed. Within the same period, we can conduct free, fair and credible elections.”

Obi concluded by redefining leadership as a call to service, not entitlement. “Leadership, to me, is not about entitlement. It is about service,” he said. “If given the mandate, for just one term, I will dedicate every moment to building a Nigeria that works for all.”

Obi’s remarks have sparked discussions about the feasibility of transformative governance within a single term, as Nigerians await the next election cycle.
