Obasa: DSS Frees Lagos Lawmakers After Colleagues Storm Office

Over 20 members of the Lagos State House of Assembly stormed the Lagos Command of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Shangisha on Thursday in protest over the detention of two of their colleagues who had been invited for questioning.

The two lawmakers, Lanre Afinni and Sylvester Ogunkelu were reportedly invited by the DSS to allegedly break into the office of the Clerk of the House to seize the mace used in effecting the removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.

Obasa, who was removed as Speaker about two weeks ago over allegations of misconduct, was succeeded by Mojisola Meranda, who was the Deputy Speaker at the time of her elevation.

During a welcome event held in his honour at Ikeja GRA on Saturday, Obasa maintained that he remained the legitimate Speaker despite his removal. He contended that his impeachment did not follow constitutional procedures and emphasised that he would only accept his removal if done properly.

“I believe strongly I am still the speaker until the right thing has been done. If you want to remove me, remove me the proper way, and I will not contest it.

“I’m a Muslim and I believe in fate. But let’s do it the way it should be done,” Obasa said.

However, in a statement signed by Ogundipe Olukayode following their appearance at the DSS office, the lawmakers confirmed that all detained members had been released.

“All detained lawmakers have since been released,” the lawmakers stated. They reaffirmed that the removal of the former Speaker was conducted lawfully, in line with constitutional provisions.

The lawmakers emphasised that the decision adhered strictly to the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Powers and Privileges Act. They referenced Sections 92 and 96, which outline the procedures for electing and removing a Speaker, stressing that due process was followed.

“The Lagos State House of Assembly, as an independent arm of government, exercised its constitutional duty in the best interest of the people of Lagos. Any attempt to challenge this lawful action undermines the authority granted to us by the Nigerian Constitution,” the lawmakers stated.

While commending the DSS for its professionalism and for ensuring a smooth and respectful engagement, the lawmakers reiterated their commitment to their legislative duties.

They called on all stakeholders, including the executive and the public, to respect the sanctity of legislative processes and avoid undue interference.

It was reported that the embattled former Speaker submitted a petition to the DSS concerning the process of his removal.
