NTTF Names Aruna Quadri, Omotayo, Bello For ITTF African Championships In Ethiopia
The Nigeria Table Tennis Federation has named a strong contingent of stars for the 2024 ITTF African Championships holding in Addis Ababa between October 12 and 19.
The likes of Aruna Quadri, Olajide Omotayo, Ajoke Ojomu and Fatimo Bello lead the list while upcoming stars like Matthew Kuti, Muiz Adegoke, Abdulbasit Abdulfatai, Aishat Rabiu, Hope Udoaka, and Aziza Sezuo are also part of the squad to represent Nigeria in the competition.
Highly-rated Matthew Kuti is expected to make his second appearance in a continental competition after making his debut at the 2023 African Games in Ghana and competed in the 2023 African Championships in Tunisia.
The likes of Hope Udoaka, West Africa women’s champion, Aishat Rabiu and Aziza Sezuo will be making their first appearance at the African Championships.
NTTF Vice President, Adesoji Tayo revealed that the choice of young players in the squad is to expose them to top class competitions early in their career.
He said, “We decided a few years ago to unearth new players, and we are happy that some of these players are coming through. They represented the country at the regional tournament in Togo and competed against top players from the region.
“This is another opportunity for them to gain experience at the African Championships. We are not expecting too much from them because they still need to gain more confidence. They have experienced players like Aruna, Omotayo, Bello, and Ojomu to learn from. We hope they can hold their own against some of the best players in Africa,”
The competition will take place at the Ethiopian Sport Academy on the outskirts of Addis Ababa.
