Nsukka Nursing College Commends Mbah, Seeks More Help
Gov Peter Mbah of Enugu State has been commended for his support for the College of Nursing Sciences and Health Technology, Nsukka, which has led to improved academic activities and course accreditations of the institution.
The Provost of the college, Commrd Eddy Amechi Egbara, made the commendation during the matriculation of the college on Thursday.
He said, “Apart from the approval and timely release of monthly subventions to the college, the governor has within the year 2023 and now provided the college with some educational/laboratory equipment and instruments that have powered some of our programmes, including the Environmental Health Technology, Epidemiology and Diseases Control Technology, Public Health Technology, Pharmacy Technicians and X-ray/medical image technicians.
“He also approved the sitting of the Nursing Science Department of the college at the General Hospital, Nsukka.”
Egbara added that due to the improvement recorded by the college, its admission quota increased.
In his words, “The administration has secured an increased admission quota of 50 candidates for the Community Health Extension Workers (CHEW) programme from the regulatory body, the Community Health Practitioners Registration Board of Nigeria (CHIPRBN). The quota is now 125 candidates per annum. The increase was a result of the college’s excellent performance in the February 2024 re-accreditation exercise. Today, the college has full accreditation of the programme.”
He also commended the Parent- Teacher Association of the college for collaborating with the college to build a demonstration ground for environmental health training programmes, adding that, “The ground is now set for the proposed re-accreditation visit of the Environmental Health Council of Nigeria (EHCON).”
The provost however drew the attention of the state government and various agencies to the challenges facing the institution.
Some of the challenges facing the college, according to Egbara, are recruitment of professional and technical staff, provision of office accommodation, a borehole, a standard e-library, a coaster bus and other utility vehicles.
A number of 258 students matriculated during the event. They were admitted into departments of Community Health Extension Workers, Environmental Health Technology, Public Health Technology, Pharmacy Technicians, Epidemiology and Diseases Control Technology and Medical Image (X-ray) Technicians.
The event was graced by members of the Governing Council of the college, led by Prof Chika Ukwuaaba; parents of the students, officials of the state government and representatives of State University of Medical and Applied Sciences, Igboeno, as well as those of the School of Health Technology, Oji River.
