The Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, has restated the Corps’ commitment to safeguarding the nation’s Critical National Assets and Infrastructure in line with its statutory mandate.

Audi gave the assurance while deploying a tactical team of officers to the site of Tuesday’s train derailment along the Abuja-Kaduna rail corridor. The incident, which occurred at KM 49 between Kubwa and Asham stations, involved a Kaduna-bound passenger train carrying 618 passengers.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) suspended operations on the Abuja-Kaduna corridor following Tuesday’s train derailment that left six passengers injured.

Addressing newsmen after an on-the-spot assessment of the scene, the NSCDC boss emphasised that the Corps remains fully dedicated to ensuring the safety of national infrastructure as well as civilian protection through rescue operations and disaster management.

“We will continue to put all necessary measures in place to make sure our rail corridors remain safer and accident-free,” he said.

The NSCDC Commandant General, who was accompanied by other key security stakeholders during the inspection, commended the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Dr. Kayode Opeifa, for his commitment and steadfastness.

He further warned that anyone caught sabotaging railway installations would be apprehended and prosecuted, stressing that the Corps would not relent in its duty to protect public assets from vandalism or criminal acts.

The Corps assured Nigerians of its readiness to collaborate with relevant agencies to forestall future occurrences while reinforcing public confidence in the safety of the nation’s transport infrastructure.
