Northern CAN mourns Buhari’s sense of patriotism, discipline
The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, in the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, has described the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari as a monumental loss to the country.
CAN also described the former President as a father whose leadership left a lasting imprint on the nation’s development and will be remembered for years to come.
Rev. Joseph John Hayab, the northern CAN chairman, in a statement said that the passing of Buhari marked the end of a significant chapter in Nigeria’s political evolution, as well as a blueprint for many to learn and copy from.
He opined, “Although opinions were divided on some of Buhari’s policies while in office, the former President has a strong sense of patriotism, discipline, and commitment to national unity.”
Hayab said that Buhari’s contribution to the Nigerian state, both as a military leader and a democratically elected president, would continue to shape national discourse for generations to come and also serve as a way to greatness to future generations.
According to him, Buhari first led the country as Head of State and later served as a democratically elected President, saying that he launched the “war against indiscipline and corruption.“
The Northern CAN extended its condolences to the former First Lady, Aisha Buhari, and the entire family, enjoining them to take solace in the legacy of public service left behind by the late leader and prayed for God’s comfort and strength for the family during this period of mourning.
He lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s response to the loss by declaring national mourning and ordering Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the United Kingdom to accompany the late president’s remains back to Nigeria.
He appealed to Nigerians to honour Buhari’s memory by fostering unity, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence across political and religious divides and to remember the former president with dignity and gratitude for his sacrifices for the unity and progress of the country.
President Muhammadu Buhari died in London at about 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, following a prolonged illness.
President Tinubu has ordered that national flags be flown at half-staff in honour of the late statesman.
