Norris Defeats Piastri To Win Hungarian Grand Prix

McLaren Driver Lando Norris earned a hard-fought victory over Oscar Piastri to win the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday.

Norris produced a dominant performance to brush aside his teammate, Piastri, and Charles Leclerc.

He endured a poor start after dropping from third on the grid to fifth on the opening lap, before McLaren switched to a one-stop strategy.

The switch enabled him to gain track position over Charles Leclerc and Piastri which led him to a deserved victory.

Piastri did not give up without a fight, overtaking Ferrari’s Leclerc after their second stops before losing out to Norris.

The result reduced Piastri’s lead to nine points in the Drivers’ Championship table ahead of the summer break.

George Russell finished third followed by Charles Leclerc in fourth, Fernando Alonso, and Gabriel Bortoleto finished in fifth and sixth respectively.

Max Verstappen endured a disappointing performance to finish ninth in the race while Lewis Hamilton occupied the 12th position.

Norris admitted the race was tough while describing it as a perfect result.

He said: “It was tough, it was tough. We weren’t really planning on the one-stop at the beginning, but after the first lap it was kind of our only option to get back into things. It was tough. The final stint with Oscar catching, I was pushing flat-out. My voice has gone a little bit. But good, rewarding even more because of that – the perfect result today.

“I didn’t think it would get us the win, I thought it would get us maybe into second,” Norris said of his strategy. I knew if I had clean air and could push I could maybe make things work and that’s what we did.

“”It always is a bit of a gamble for these kinds of things. It also requires no mistakes, good laps, good strategy and that’s what we had today.

Norris described the title race with teammate Oscar Piastri as tough while looking forward to the last 10 races of the season.

He concluded: “We’re so tightly fought it’s hard to say that momentum is on anyone’s side, but we’re fighting hard both of us and it’s fun, it’s tough but fun racing with Oscar [Piastri].

“It’s great for us as a team and another one-two and our 200th win in Formula 1. Credit to Oscar, he put up a good charge and I just about held on, so I look forward to many more of these.”

Oscar Piastri, who finished second said he tried his best in the race but he is looking forward to the summer break.

He said: “I pushed as hard as I could. I saw Lando going for a one [stop] so I knew I was going to have to overtake on track, which is easier said than done around here.

“Tried a few things; it was a gamble either way and unfortunately, we were just on the other side of it. The team did a great job, the car really came alive in the second half of the race – and the car has been great all weekend. Looking forward to taking some time off.”

Formula 1 will now embark on its traditional summer break before returning for the Dutch Grand Prix on the weekend of August 29-31.

Norris has achieved nine race wins, 13 pole positions, 17 fastest laps, and 38 podiums in the 2025 Formula One season.
