NOA Urges Kebbi Communities To Relocate Over Dam Water Release
The National Orientation Agency (NOA), Kebbi State Directorate, warned communities along the River Goronyo and River Niger to relocate immediately due to the planned release of water from nearby dams.
The warning was conveyed in a statement released on Sunday by the Assistant Director and Head of Media and Communication, Larai Saminu Nazo, in Birnin Kebbi.
The statement noted that the controlled water release aims to preserve dam integrity but will cause a significant rise in river levels, threatening low-lying communities.
Nazo emphasised the seriousness of the warning. “The gradual release of water is essential to maintain dam safety, but it will inevitably increase water levels in the rivers. This puts residents of flood-prone areas at considerable risk.”
The Kebbi State NOA directorate said it is working with emergency management agencies and river basin authorities to reach affected communities and provide support.
It urged residents to stay informed via official channels and cooperate with local authorities on evacuation.
Nazo appealed to community leaders, residents, and stakeholders to take the warning seriously.
“We appeal to all community leaders, residents, and stakeholders in the affected areas to take this warning with the utmost seriousness.
“Timely action now can avert disaster. We urge everyone to relocate to safer areas without delay,” he said.
