NOA raises alarm over rising suicidal behaviours in Nigeria
The National Orientation Agency, NOA, has raised alarm about the increased suicidal behaviours among Nigerians.
In his message to commemorate the 2025 World Suicide Prevention Day in Dutse, Jigawa State, NOA Director, Ahmad Tijuana, stated that there is a need to raise awareness on suicide and the urgent need to break the stigma among Nigerians.
The day, he explained, aims to raise public awareness about suicidal behaviours, providing worldwide commitment and action, and highlighting the need to address mental health issues and reduce stigma globally.
He stressed the need to break the stigma, while reminding Nigerians that suicide is preventable, and that was the more reason why the agency joined the rest of the world to raise awareness.
According to Tijuana, “every year, more than 720,000 lives are lost globally to suicide, with each loss deeply affecting families and communities.”
The state Director of NOA believed that suicide is preventable and that, together, humanity can change the narrative, break harmful myths and stigma, and encouraged open and compassionate dialogue.
He enjoined all to check in on family, friends, and neighbours, believing that sometimes a simple question can save a life.
He also urged people to listen with patience and without judgment, while encouraging those struggling to seek professional help from doctors, counsellors, or hotlines, and to share information on where support can be found.
Tijuana enjoined all to use words that heal, noting that their kindness and care can bring hope, saying that the World Suicide Prevention Day is not only about remembrance but about hope.
He said that all should stand together against stigma and show that every life matters.
