NNPC To Acquire 5.2 Million Standard Cubic Feet Per Day CNG Facility

NNPC Gas Marketing Limited (NGML) is set to acquire a 5.2 million standard cubic feet per day Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) compression and refuelling facility.

The company initiated a move to seal the deal with Gas Network Services Limited (GNSL).

NNPC Gas Ltd is a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC).

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) disclosed the development in a merger and acquisition notice it issued.

The development is a significant stride in the effort of the state-owned NNPCL to drive CNG usage in the country.

Since the removal of subsidy that drove the cost of Premium Motor Spirit, also called petrol upward, the NNPCL has pushed for CNG as a cheaper and cleaner alternative.

Disclosing the deal, the FCCPC said it would have huge impact on the CNG market.

FCCPC also argued that the transaction will benefit consumers through expanded access to cleaner energy solutions.

The CNG facility is currently operated by GNSL.

The facility has dispensing points for refuelling natural gas vehicles (NGVs), which caters to clients outside the reach of traditional pipeline networks.

NNPC has committed to building numerous CNG stations, including 12 mother stations and mini-LNG plants, to boost gas supply and accessibility.

Recall that in February 2025, NNPCL commenced the deployment of five new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) cascades at designated stations in Abuja with the aim of boosting access.

“This will increase the supply of CNG at designated stations, improving access for users. We’re actively monitoring feedback to ensure a smoother refueling experience, and we’re optimistic this will help reduce waiting times for riders,” the NNPCL said.

Last year October, the NNPCL signed a partnership with Shell, TotalEnergies, and Agip, to complete a historic agreement to supply gas to a $3.3bn methanol plant being developed by Brass Fertilizer & Petrochemical Company Limited in Bayelsa State.

The move also aligns with the federal government effort to expand CNG access across the country.

NNPC is also collaborating with partners like NIPCO Gas Limited to launch CNG stations and promote CNG adoption.
