Nnamdi Kanu Not Repatriated To Kenya – NJC
The National Judicial Council (NJC) has dismissed claims that the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has been released from custody and repatriated to Kenya.
In a statement signed by its Deputy Director of Information, Kemi Ogedengbe, on Thursday in Abuja, the NJC described the report as “false and a figment of the writer’s imagination.”
The NJC stated that Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, never issued a ruling or directive for Kanu’s release, nor presided over any case involving him.
“The council wishes to state that the media report is false and a figment of the writer’s imagination, as there are no court proceedings, decisions, or judgments where such statements ascribed to His Lordship were made,” the statement read.
It further emphasised that the CJN “neither presided over any case involving Kanu at the apex court, where jurisdiction issues were argued nor made any such pronouncement.”
The NJC also dismissed claims that the CJN wrote a formal letter to the Kenyan government apologising for Kanu’s arrest, urging the public to disregard the fake report.
The IPOB leader, who is facing a seven-count terrorism charge brought against him by the Federal Government, is currently in the custody of the Department of State Services, (DSS)
His trial is set to commence tomorrow, March 21, before Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Kanu’s family, in a statement on Tuesday, revealed that the IPOB leader has opted to defend himself in court when the trial resumes.
According to the statement, Kanu decided to represent himself to ensure a fair hearing without the legal delays that have hindered his case.
