The Ilorin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has secured the conviction and sentencing of nine suspects for offences related to cybercrime, impersonation, conspiracy, and unlawful retention of criminal proceeds.

The convicts: Otitoju Moses Sesan, Ayodele Joseph Daisi, Adeoye Joseph, Abubakar Aliyu Abdulmalik, Emeka Oluwatobi Achi, Isaac Babalola Oluwafemi, Afolabi Faith Olatoye, Zubeiru Zubeiru Junior, and Abdulkadir Taofeek, were convicted before Justices Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court, and Justices Haleema Saleeman and Sulaiman Akanbi of the Kwara State High Court, all sitting in Ilorin.

According to the EFCC, Sesan, a 31-year-old gospel musician, was arraigned alongside Daisi, Joseph, and Abdulmalik before Justice Awogboro. Achi, Oluwafemi, and Olatoye were tried before Justice Saleeman, while Junior and Taofeek appeared before Justice Akanbi.

The charge against Sesan stated: “That you, Otitoju Moses Sesan, sometime between October 2024 and December 2025, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, did retain control of the gross sum of N8,404,339 in your UBA account, being proceeds of criminal conduct, thereby committing an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 17(a) and (b) of the EFCC Act, 2004.”

Prosecution counsel Aliyu Adebayo, Sesan Ola, Rashidat Alao, and Mustapha Kaigama presented confessional statements, relevant exhibits, and recovered funds as evidence before the courts.

Ayodele Joseph Daisi was sentenced to eight months in prison without the option of a fine, with the court ordering the forfeiture of his Techno 19 mobile phone and N243,750 in his UBA account to the Federal Government.

Adeoye Joseph also received an eight-month prison term without option of fine. He forfeited $220, an iPhone 13, and a Techno Pop 9 device to the government.

Abubakar Aliyu Abdulmalik was sentenced to six months imprisonment and forfeited his iPhone 16 and Samsung S10 to the Federal Government.

Abdulkadir Taofeek, who appeared before Justice Akanbi, was handed three years imprisonment, with the option of a N500,000 fine. He also forfeited N800,000, an iPhone 14 Pro Max, and a Samsung phone.

Emeka Oluwatobi Achi, Isaac Babalola Oluwafemi, and Afolabi Faith Olatoye were each sentenced to six months imprisonment, or alternatively, to pay a N100,000 fine. Achi was directed to refund N3.35 million within three months and must report biweekly to the EFCC, accompanied by his parents, until full restitution is made.

Zubeiru Zubeiru Junior was sentenced to one year and three months in prison, or the option of a N350,000 fine. He forfeited an iPhone XR and $325, deemed both as the instrument and proceeds of his crime.
