NiMET Warns Of Thunderstorms In FCT, North Central, South-East States
The Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMET) has issued a thunderstorm alert for parts of Benue, Enugu, Plateau, and Nasarawa states.
The agency warned that the storms may extend to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and surrounding areas within the next one to six hours.
Other states to be impacted include Edo, Imo, Abia, and Anambra.
The alert, which remains valid until May 3, 2025, was communicated on Friday by Nkechi Isa, Head of Public Affairs at the Federal Emergency Management Department (FEMD).
It reads, “A weather alert issued by NiMET and valid till the 3rd of May, 2025 say the storms May propagate to affect the FCT and States contiguous to the Territory within 1-6 hours.
“Other states that may be affected are Edo, Imo, Enugu, Abia and Anambra.”
Isa noted that strong winds may precede the rains, particularly in areas where thunderstorms are expected.
Residents were therefore advised to exercise caution, avoid driving under heavy rainfall, disconnect electrical appliances during storms, and stay away from tall trees to reduce the risk of falling branches.
“Residents are urged to avoid driving under heavy rains. Electrical appliances should be disconnected and people should stay away from tall trees to avoid the impact of falling branches,” the advisory added.
The Acting Director General of FEMD, Engr. Abdulrahman Mohammed, has placed the agency’s Search and Rescue Team on standby.
Abdulrahman reaffirmed FEMD’s commitment to the safety of lives and property, and urged residents to remain vigilant and proactive during this period of inclement weather.
He also reminded the public to utilise the 112 toll-free emergency number in case of any emergency situations.
