Nigeria’s Pension Assets Hit ₦23.33 Trillion Amid Growing Investment Income

As of March 31, the total assets under Nigeria’s Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) had risen to ₦23.33 trillion, according to the National Pension Commission (PenCom).

This marked a ₦820 billion increase from the ₦22.51 trillion recorded at the end of 2024.

Mr. Saleem Abdulrahman, Director of Surveillance at PenCom, explained that the growth was driven by additional contributions from Retirement Savings Account (RSA) holders and gains from investments in equities and fixed-income instruments.

Of the total pension assets, RSA Funds I–VI accounted for ₦17.90 trillion or 76.73%. Existing pension schemes contributed ₦2.77 trillion (11.87%), while closed pension funds represented ₦2.66 trillion (11.40%).

Abdulrahman also noted that a majority of the pension funds — 62.09% — were invested in Federal Government securities. Domestic equities made up 11.02%, and money market instruments comprised 8.91%.

“The industry portfolio reported annualised year to date performance of 19.29 per cent as at 31 March 2025,” he said.

PenCom, in collaboration with Financial Sector Deepening Africa (FSD Africa), is hosting a workshop for board members of Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs) to explore alternative investment opportunities. This initiative seeks to improve portfolio diversification and boost long-term returns.
