Nigeria’s Basketball Team Defeat Uganda To Book Quarter-finals Spot
The Junior D’Tigers of Nigeria defeated Uganda 72-61 to qualify for the quarter-finals of the 2024 FIBA U18 Afrobasket Championship in South Africa.
The Fubara Onyanabo-led side earned their second victory of the competition after the 70-65 victory over Angola last week.
The first quarter ended 21-15, and the second 19-11 before they rounded it off with a 17-15 win in the last quarter.
Nigeria started the competition on a losing note with a 70-57 loss to Egypt in their Group B opener on September 4.
Uganda crashed out of the competition after losing all their three matches.
They lost their first match against Angola 89-73 and the second match against Egypt 73-50 before losing to Nigeria.
Nigeria hold the record for most wins in the competition, having clinched 7 gold and 3 silver.
Egypt are second with 6 gold, 2 silver, and 3 bronze medals, while Angola are third with 4 gold, 7 silver, and 3 bronze medals.
The FIBA U18 AfroBasket 2024 started on Sunday, September 1 and will round off on September 14.
The finalists will earn the right to represent Africa at next year’s FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup in Switzerland.
