Nigerians without fingers deserve voting rights – JONAPWD tells INEC
The Chairman, Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities, in Abia State, Wisdom Kalu has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to ensure that their members who have no fingers are not disenfranchised from voting during elections.
Kalu made the appeal in Umuahia on Thursday, during a stakeholders’ meeting on the continuous Voter Registration (CVR) that begins today, August 18.
He observed that some Nigerians who were born without fingers or those who lost their own during accidents or other industrial occupations, should not be denied the opportunity to vote for candidates of their choice.
Kalu also called for a friendly environment for physically-challenged persons in Abia during elections, to strengthen a democratic society.
In his speech, Abia State Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, Chukwuemeka Ibeziako said the Continuous Voter Registration underscored INEC’s commitment to credible, free, fair, inclusive, and transparent elections.
He said that online pre-registration was starting on August 18, while in-person registration will follow from Monday, August 25, 2025, at all local government area offices and designated centres nationwide.
According to the REC, CVR , the exercise will involve citizens who are turning 18 or registering for the first time and
voters replacing their lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
He also said that registered voters transferring to new locations and those updating personal details such as names or addresses and correction of PVC information will be attended to.
He urged Abia community leaders and civil society organisations to sensitise and mobilise eligible Nigerians.
