Nigerians Demand Justice For Female Lagos Bus Driver Assaulted By Thug
Nigerians have taken to social media to demand justice for a female commercial bus driver in Lagos, Yetunde Amole, who was reportedly assaulted by a street thug identified as Friday Onu.
Amole was allegedly beaten by the notorious Lagos street tax collector—popularly known as an “Agbero”—while trying to stop him from stealing her car battery.
In a video seen by THE WHISTLER on Wednesday, Amole could be seen crying and pleading for justice after the violent attack.
She alleged that Onu had boarded her vehicle under a bridge near the Oriental Hotel, claiming he was heading to the Nigerian Law School. Amole said she became suspicious after noticing through her rear-view mirror that he was attempting to remove her car battery.
When she confronted him, he allegedly launched a brutal attack, beating her, tearing her clothes, and dragging her in public.
The incident sparked outrage online, with many Nigerians calling for swift justice.
An X user, Moshood Okunola (@Wealthrope02), wrote: “This is disturbing. Justice must take its course.”
Another user, Immanuel Okafor (@waxdigitals), described the incident as a gross violation of Amole’s rights and urged the leadership of the Lagos transport union to take action.
“This is utterly unacceptable. A Lagos thug assaulted a female driver in an attempt to steal her car battery—a clear violation of her rights. I call on the Lagos Transport Union and its chairman, Kokozaria (@Kokozaria), to investigate this incident thoroughly and ensure justice is served. Nigerians are watching, and we demand full accountability for such blatant abuse,” Okafor stated.
Another user, @GrandpaTE, commented: “In a decent society, this thug should be in jail by now. “But in some parts of Nigeria “Area Boys” are kings of the Streets. It’s shameful.”
Similarly, Olagoke Suulola (@SunnyolOFFICIAL) called for the immediate arrest of the suspect, saying, “This is uncalled for. The guy need to be arrested and punished for doing this to a lady.”
Meanwhile, the spokesperson of the Lagos State Police Command, DSP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed in a statement on Wednesday that Onu had been arrested and assured the public that justice would be served.
“Following a prompt response by officers of Maroko Division, Friday Onu was arrested shortly after the incident and detained at the division. Preparations for his arraignment were underway when he suddenly took ill. He was immediately transferred to Falomo Police Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment under close supervision.
“The Lagos State Police Command assures the public that justice will be served. The suspect will be charged to a court of competent jurisdiction as soon as police medical professionals declare him fit to stand trial.
“The Command reiterates its commitment to ensuring the safety and protection of all residents and urges the public to continue cooperating with law enforcement authorities. We also commend Ms. Amole for her bravery and assure her and all victims of crime that their cases will be thoroughly pursued to ensure justice is served in all cases,” Hundeyin stated.
The incident happened on Monday at about 2:00 p.m.
