Nigerian With HIV For 31 Years Regrets Infidelity To Wife
Salisu Ahmed, a Nigerian man who has lived with HIV for 31 years, has opened up about his experience with the virus and the heavy toll it took on his life.
Ahmed revealed this during a recent interview with reality star Doyin David, where he stated that his infection stemmed from an extramarital affair, a choice he deeply regrets.
He reflected on the painful stigma he has faced over the decades and recalled being ostracised in his own home, and denied access to shared facilities like the bathroom and toilet.
“I am Salisu Ahmed, I have been living with this virus for 31 years. The first experiment of going outside my matrimonial home is how it happened,” Ahmed stated.
He noted that sexual intercourse is a primary means of transmission, adding that “It has been proven that about 85 to 90 per cent of people living with HIV contracted this thing through sexual intercourse.”
Once a teacher, Ahmed also suffered professional setbacks as he was asked to stop attending work.
“I was denied the use of the bathroom of the compound, I was not allowed to access the toilet, I was formerly a teacher so I was asked honourably to stop coming to the school,” he explained how the stigma of his status cost him his job.
He stated that the most heartbreaking aspect of his situation is abandonment by his family.
According to Ahmed, his wife and children left him after he was diagnosed with the disease.
“She packed everything, including the children at home. They left me,” he said somberly.
