Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. At least 13 worshippers were confirmed dead, while many others sustained varying degrees of injury following an attack on the Unguwar Mantau community of Malumfashi Local Government Area, Katsina State. The ugly incident occurred while the victims were observing morning prayer in the early hours of Tuesday.

2. The Director-General of Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, Capt. Chris Najomo has directed that all phones and other electronic devices must be switched off during critical stages of flights. The NCAA DG also directed all domestic airline operators to amend their operations manuals to reflect the new directive and submit them for immediate approval.

3. The Department of State Services (DSS) has urged a Federal High Court in Abuja against granting bail to the five men being prosecuted over their alleged involvement in the June 5, 2022 attack at St. Francs Xavier Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State in view of their alleged link with foreign terrorist groups. The DSS, in a counter-affidavit to the defendants’ bail application, also raised concern about their capacity to interfere with prosecution’s witnesses if granted bail.

4. Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, yesterday, declared that the 2027 presidential ambition of former Minister of Transportation, Mr Rotimi Amaechi, is dead on arrival insisting that Amaechi would be the last person considered for the ADC ticket. He also alleged that former Secretary to the Government of the Federation SGF, Babachir Lawal, is angry with President Bola Tinubu because he was not chosen as vice president.

5. A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has ordered the temporary freezing of four Jaiz Bank accounts linked to the immediate-past Group Managing Director, GMD, of Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, Mr Mele Kyari, over alleged fraud. The trial Judge, Justice Emeka Nwite made the order, on Tuesday after counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, moved an ex-parte motion to the effect.

6. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has grilled senior officials of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, NAHCON, over allegations of fraud and mismanagement during the 2025 Hajj operations. Those questioned include Aliu Abdulrazak, Commissioner of Policy, Personnel and Finance, PPMF, and Aminu Muhammed, Director of Finance and Accounts, DFA.

7. The Naira on Tuesday depreciated to N1,555 per dollar in the parallel market from N1,550 per dollar on Monday. But the Naira appreciated to N1,534.5 per dollar in the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM).

8. African Democratic Congress, ADC, has assured Nigerians that prominent political leaders, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rotimi Amaechi, would remain united in their mission to transform the country, regardless of who eventually secured the party’s presidential ticket for the 2027 elections. The assurance was given by the party’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Jackie Wayas, during an interview on Tuesday.

9. Some members of the People’s Democratic Party in Ayedire Local Government Area of the State on Tuesday announced their defection to the African Democratic Congress. The defectors led by Tunji Ogunrinu were received into their new party by the officials of Omoluabi Progressives, a political organisation backed by the National Secretary of the party, Mr Rauf Aregbesola.

10. The Independent National Electoral Commission has set Thursday, August 21, for a supplementary election in the Kaura-Namoda South Constituency, Zamfara State. The supplementary election comes after the Returning Officer, Professor Lawal Sa’adu of Federal University Gusau, declared the Saturday by-election inconclusive.
