Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. The Trade Union Congress, TUC, on Monday rejected the Federal Government’s planned 5% tax on petroleum products, describing the proposal as “reckless act of economic wickedness.” TUC has asked the government to withdraw the proposal within 14 days, vowing to shut down critical sectors in the country if the government failed to do so.

2. Former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has petitioned the Police Service Commission, PSC, and the Inspector-General of Police over alleged unprofessional conduct, abuse of office, and violations of the Police Act by senior officers of the Kaduna State Police Command. El-Rufai’s petition comes in the wake of an invitation extended to him and other politicians by the State Criminal Investigation Department for questioning.

3. Talks between representatives of Dangote Petroleum Refinery and the leadership of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers dragged on for several hours on Monday night. This came as officials of NUPENG paralysed fuel loading activities across petroleum depots nationwide on Monday.

4. Two persons, Eboh Enomwa and Stephen Imaghodo, have been killed in a leadership tussle in Iyanomo Community, Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area, Edo State. This was contained in a press statement by Fred Itua, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Monday Okpebholo, who said the state government has launched an investigation into the murder of the duo.

5. Aggrieved residents of Oworonshoki trooped out in protest on Monday, decrying the recent demolition that rocked the area on Saturday. The residents took the protest to a section of the Third Mainland Bridge, outward from Lagos, blocking traffic and leaving motorists stranded.

6. The Federal Government has assured retired soldiers that their entitlements will be paid this week, bringing an end to their week-long protest at the gate of the Ministry of Finance in Abuja. By 3:00 pm on Monday, the protesting ex-servicemen had quietly dismantled their canopy and dispersed after meeting with officials from the Ministry of Finance and Military Pension Board.

7. Two Nigerians have been arrested in India in separate incidents involving romance scams and drug trafficking. According to The Hindu’s report on Friday, the Bagalkot district police arrested a 47-year-old Nigerian, Oliver Okechukwu, on charges of duping a woman of ₹5.5 lakh (about N9.5m) under the pretext of marriage.

8. The Independent National Electoral Commission has announced that over 3.5 million Nigerians have completed online pre-registration in the ongoing nationwide Continuous Voter Registration exercise. The update was provided in a press release issued on Monday by the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun.

9. Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, while presenting his speech at the West Africa Association of Public Accounts Committees conference on Monday, expressed concerns that Nigeria’s debt had reached “a critical point” and called for urgent reforms in borrowing practices and oversight.

10. Following the discovery of a man’s dead body inside a car in the National Assembly parking lot, on Sunday, and the subsequent alarm raised, the Police Command in Abuja has begun an investigation to unravel the mystery. Spokesperson of Federal Capital Territory, FCT Command, Josephine Adeh, made the disclosure, on Monday.
