Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know Sunday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. Former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Audu Ogbeh died on Saturday. He was 78. Ogbeh, who also served as the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from 2001 to 2005, died peacefully, his family announced in a statement.

2. Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has sacked two of his Senior Special Assistants (SSAs), following their indictment by findings from investigative committees probing separate cases of misconduct. The Secretary to the State Government, Umar Farouk, who announced the governor’s decision, said while one of them was sacked for mastermind role played in the bail of a suspected drug baron.

3. The Death toll of those infected by the cholera epidemic has risen to 16 persons in Niger State. Two weeks ago during the initial breakout, 13 persons were recorded dead.

4. The Lagos State Government has sealed Myca 7 Court, Van Daniel Estate, off Orchid Road, Lekki, for allegedly discharging sewage into public drains. This was contained in a message by the state Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, shared on X, on Saturday.

5. Operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have arrested seven suspected armed robbers and recovered firearms after raiding a shrine allegedly used by the gang to fortify themselves before operations in Ikot Osong village, Obot Akara Local Government Area. The command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, disclosed this in a statement issued in Uyo, the state capital, on Saturday.

6. Two persons, a mother and child, have died on the spot, and others were hospitalised after a trailer lost control and rammed into a commercial vehicle at the Ulasi River Bridge, Okija Junction in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State. It was gathered that the crash occurred late on Thursday when the driver of the trailer experienced brake failure and crashed into the Toyota Hiace bus on the bridge, resulting in multiple fatalities.

7. Nigerian telecoms operator 9mobile has rebranded to T2 as part of a strategic push to revive its market position, expand its reach, and compete more aggressively in the country’s fast-growing digital economy.

8. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has seized over 11.2 million kilogrammes of assorted illicit drugs and destroyed 1,572 hectares of cannabis farms in 54 months. The agency also arrested 67,345 suspects during the period, its Chairman, Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa (rtd), said in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun, on Saturday.

9. Troops of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) in Plateau, have arrested one Musa Ali in Jos for impersonating as its personnel. Maj. Samson Zhakom, the Media Officer of the operation disclosed this in a statement on Saturday in Jos. Zhakom said that the suspect was arrested over attempt to defraud unsuspecting members of the public.

10. A former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has claimed that Labour Party, LP, candidate, Peter Obi, won the 2023 presidential election in Rivers State. Amaechi stated this while speaking during an X Space discussion on Saturday.
