Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know Saturday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has declared Olasijibomi Ogundele, Chief Executive Officer of Sujimoto Luxury Construction Limited, wanted over allegations of diversion of funds and money laundering. The anti-graft agency made the declaration in a notice by its spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, on Friday.

2. Former governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, says he is fully committed to ongoing efforts by opposition leaders to unseat President Bola Tinubu. The former speaker of the House of Representatives dismissed suggestions that the African Democratic Congress, ADC-led coalition was driven by northern interests.

3. Governors elected on the platform of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, are alleging that Nigeria is heading towards dictatorship. In a statement which Dr. Emmanuel Agbo, Director General of the PDP Governors’ Forum issued on behalf of the governors, he urged leaders to use the occasion of Eid-El-Maulud to urgently address insecurity, “compromised judicial system and failed economic policies”.

4. Tanker drivers under the Petroleum Tanker Drivers branch of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers have threatened to stop fuel loading from Monday, September 8 over an ongoing dispute with the management of the Dangote Refinery. The union said the conflict stemmed from the refinery’s plan to deploy 4,000 compressed natural gas, CNG-powered trucks for direct distribution of fuel to retailers.

5. Residents of Malabo in Fufore Local Government of Adamawa State have raised concern over the outbreak of a strange ailment affecting body parts and causing severe pain among victims. Some patients who spoke in Malabo on Friday, said the disease usually begins like a boil, later bursts, and gradually eats up the flesh, damaging bones in the affected area.

6. The Federal Government has said that revenue of states has doubled since the removal of the petrol subsidy. Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, stated this while speaking during the National Health Financing Dialogue in Abuja. According to the minister, petrol subsidy was a distortion “which was only benefiting a few and even benefiting foreigners”.

7. No fewer than 76 security personnel lost their lives in Benue state in the course of discharging their duties in the last one year. Governor Hyacinth Alia, who made this known while receiving families of the deceased security personnel in Makurdi, assured that their sacrifices would not be in vain.

8. A young man whose name was given as IK has allegedly committed suicide in the Kagini area of Abuja. The incident which video was posted on the verified Facebook page of Lere Olayinka, the Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication and Social Media to the Federal Capital Territory FCT minister, Nyesom Wike, was said to have happened on Friday.

9. The Federal Government said it had intensified monitoring and screening procedures at all points of entry in response to the ongoing outbreak of the Ebola Virus Disease in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Director of Port Health Services at the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Dr Akpan Nse, disclosed this in an interview on Friday.

10. No fewer than 26 suspected drug traffickers were arrested in Edo State by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency in August. The NDLEA also destroyed a total of 41,410.53 kilogrammes of various narcotic drugs. The State Commander of the NDLEA, Mitchell Ofoyeju, stated this in a statement on Friday.
