Nigerian Jurist Appointed Judge In Canada

Imo born Nigerian-Canadian international jurist, Dr. Chile Eboe-Osuji has been appointed as a judge of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ).

Dr. Osuji will replace Justice Andrew Burgess, who retired on April 11, 2025.

This appointment was made by the Regional Judicial and Legal Services Commission. Eboe-Osuji will be taking up his new role on April 11, 2025.

Dr. Osuji hails from Duruike kindred, Umuduruehie- Aguna, Anara community in the Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of Imo state.

He achieved a historic milestone by being the first and only black individual globally to be elected as the President of The International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, Netherlands and held that position for a term of three years from 2018 to 2021.

The international jurist completed his secondary education at Aquinas Secondary School, OSU in Mbano, and obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Calabar in Nigeria before pursuing further studies abroad, ultimately achieving the highest level of success in global legal practice.

Born in Anara-Mbano, this distinguished jurist is a member of the Media Freedom Coalition’s High-Level Panel of Legal Experts on Media Freedom.

He also served as the fourth president of the International Criminal Court of Justice in The Hague.
