Nigerian Army sensitizes troops on human rights, professional conduct in Taraba
In a renewed effort to strengthen professionalism and adherence to human rights standards within the Nigerian Army, the Army Headquarters, AHQ, through its Department of Civil Military Affairs, DCMA, has organized a sensitization workshop for troops of 6 Brigade Nigerian Army/Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke, OPWS, in Jalingo, Taraba State.
The workshop, held on Thursday in Jalingo, is said to be part of a broader strategy to ensure that military personnel operate within the bounds of legality and respect for human dignity during both internal security operations and civil engagements.
Speaking, the Chief of Civil-Military Affairs, CCMA, Major General GU Chibuisi, highlighted the critical role of the training in guiding troops’ behavior amid evolving security challenges.
“These operations place significant responsibilities on our soldiers. Therefore, it is crucial that they fully understand the legal frameworks guiding their actions. Respect for human rights must remain a cornerstone of all our operations,” Major General Chibuisi said.
He noted that beyond battlefield conduct, the workshop was also geared towards nurturing responsible, law abiding soldiers who serve as role models in society.
Also speaking, the Commander of 6 Brigade/Sector 3 OPWS, Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, underscored the importance of the training in reinforcing the Nigerian Army’s commitment to discipline and human rights protection.
He commended the Brigade’s professional conduct during recent national protests, during which troops maintained calm and restraint, recording zero casualties.
“This sensitization is not just a refresher but a solemn reminder of our oath to safeguard lives and property. I commend the DCMA for this timely initiative and urge our troops to absorb and apply these vital lessons,” General Uwa stated.
He also lauded the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Olatunbosun Oluyede, for his commitment to troop welfare, continuous capacity building, and the professional development of personnel across all commands.
