Nigeria To Host Cricket World Cup Africa Qualifier
Nigeria is set to host the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) U-19 Men’s World Cup African Qualifier, which will be held in Lagos from March 26 to April 6, 2025.
The tournament is expected to feature six of Africa’s most talented youth cricket teams, with the likes of Kenya, Uganda, Namibia, Tanzania, Sierra Leone, and host Nigeria.
Nigeria will battle it out with the five countries for a sole ticket to represent Africa at the ICC U-19 Men’s World Cup.
The matches will be played at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) Cricket Oval, and the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Cricket Oval.
The President of the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF), Uyi Akpata, is confident that the country is ready to host a historic tournament.
He said: “Nigeria is thrilled to welcome these talented young cricketers and their supporters to Lagos.
“Our nation is known for its warm hospitality and fascinating cricketing potential, and we are committed to making this qualifier a memorable experience for all. This tournament is not just about competition; it’s about celebrating the growth of cricket in Africa and inspiring the next generation of players.”
Nigeria will begin their campaign against Namibia at the TBS Oval, while Kenya will meet Sierra Leone at the Unilag Oval on March 28 on the opening day of the tournament.
In 2019, Nigeria secured the ticket to represent Africa in the ICC U-19 Men’s World Cup hosted in South Africa in 2020 after winning the African qualifiers.
It would be recalled that in January, Nigeria finished fifth at the ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup in Malaysia in their first-ever outing in the competition, while also securing an automatic ticket to the next U19 Cricket World Cup.
