Nigeria To Battle Senegal, Congo In African Nations Championship

Nigeria have been drawn alongside Congo, Senegal, and Sudan in Group D of the African Nations Championship.

The draw ceremony was held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), Nairobi, Kenya, on Wednesday night.

The Home-based Super Eagles qualified for the competition after seeing off Ghana in a two-legged play-off in December to make a return to the competition after six years.

Kenya, Morocco, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia will slug it out in Group A.

Tanzania, Madagascar, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, and the Central African Republic are in Group B.

Uganda, Niger, and Guinea are in Group C. They will be joined by two wild card holders to be determined by the Confederation of African Football.

The competition, which was slated to start in February, has now been moved to August 2025 due to infrastructural reasons.

CAF confirmed in a statement: “Good progress has been made in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda with the construction and upgrading of stadiums, training fields, hotels, hospitals, and other infrastructure and facilities for the hosting of a successful CHAN.

“However, the CAF technical and infrastructure experts have advised that more time is required to ensure that the infrastructure and facilities are at the levels necessary for hosting a successful CHAN.”

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) also unveiled the new logo and trophy for the 8th African Nations Championship.

CAF said: “The new look for the tournament brings a fresh identity and emphasises its deep-rooted connections to African football and culture.

“It comes with a new TotalEnergies CHAN 2024 trophy that features a sleek, contemporary design, combining gold and silver elements, representing the prestige and growing stature of the tournament.

“A significant detail is the 54 distinct lines encircling the trophy, symbolizing the 54 African nations united with a map of the continent at its core.”

Nigeria will be hoping to win the competition for the first time after losing to Morocco in the final of the 2018 edition.

The competition will be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda in August.
