Nigeria Declares Tuesday Public Holiday to Honour Late President Buhari

The Federal Government has announced that Tuesday, July 15, 2025, will be observed as a public holiday in memory of the late immediate past President, Muhammadu Buhari.

This was made known in a statement issued by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Interior.

The statement noted that the declaration was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the government, following the express approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Tunji-Ojo stated that the public holiday is intended to pay tribute to the life and legacy of the late Nigerian leader, recognising his pivotal role in shaping the nation’s democratic evolution and his commitment to good governance and national development.

Ajani stated, “In furtherance of the seven days of national mourning declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, the Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as a public holiday in honour of the late former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR.”

“The Honourable Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government, following the approval of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.”

The Minister described the public holiday as an occasion for Nigerians to pause and reflect on the leadership journey and values championed by the late president.

The Minister said, “President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation. This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld.”

He encouraged the public to honour Buhari’s memory by promoting unity, patriotism, and peaceful coexistence—virtues the late president emphasised throughout his years of service.

In line with the national mourning declared by President Tinubu, the Federal Government reiterated that all flags should continue to fly at half-mast for the entire seven-day period, which commenced on Sunday, July 13, 2025.

The statement concluded by expressing the government’s sympathies: “The Federal Government extends its deepest condolences to the family of the late President, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, while praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.”
