The Niger State House of Assembly has urged Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago to issue an executive order banning “Marker’s Day” and “Sign-Out” celebrations in all public and private secondary and tertiary institutions across the state.

This came after a motion by Hon. Muhammad Sani Idris, representing Tafa constituency, who expressed concern over the increasing incidents of unruly behaviour, misconduct, and immoral activities during such celebrations.

Idris explained that the “ongoing trend of signing out from schools, which is presumably intended to be a celebration by final-year students, has recently been characterised by unruly behaviour and misconduct.”

Hon. Idris noted that the initial purpose of the sign-out tradition is intended to celebrate the end of school sessions for graduating students has been overshadowed by troubling incidents that could hinder efforts to develop responsible and well-rounded students.

The motion received unanimous support from fellow lawmakers, who agreed that public concerns over the issue warranted urgent action.

Deputy Speaker Hon. Afiniki Dauda, who presided over the plenary, pledged to follow up with the state governor and the State Ministry of Education to ensure the prompt implementation of the ban.
