New African Local Content Body’ll Retain Energy Sector Value, Says PETAN Chair
Chairman of the Petroleum Technology Association of Nigeria (PETAN), Mr. Wole Ogunsanya, has announced that the newly formed African Local Content Organisation (ALCO) will serve as the private sector arm of the African Petroleum Producers’ Organisation (APPO).
Ogunsanya, who is also a member of the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) Governing Council, made this known at the unveiling of ALCO during Day 2 of the 2025 Namibia Oil and Gas Conference in Windhoek, Namibia.
He explained that while APPO represents African governments engaged in oil and gas operations, ALCO will bring together national associations of service providers in the oil, gas, and mining sectors to deliver complex projects, develop local capacities, and retain value within the continent’s multibillion-dollar energy industry.
According to him, the body will play a pivotal role in mobilising private capital, deploying technology, building competent human capacity, and executing key energy projects in collaboration with APPO and the African Energy Bank (AEB) — the recently established continental funding vehicle for large-scale energy developments.
“Through the forum, we can carry out benchmark studies, join forces to solve industry problems, and enable African energy service companies to link up and find partners across the continent,” Ogunsanya said.
He noted that 14 African countries, including Nigeria, Morocco, Senegal, Angola, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, have already joined ALCO.
The PETAN chair disclosed that the organisation will be officially launched at the 2026 African Union conference, given its strategic economic importance.
He is currently serving as ALCO’s interim chair, with Ibrahim Talla of Senegal as secretary.
NCDMB’s Executive Secretary, Engr. Felix Omatsola Ogbe described ALCO as a key platform for advancing African local content and pledged the Board’s continued support for its objectives.
He was represented at the event by the Board’s Director of Corporate Services, Dr. Abdulmalik Halilu.
