NESREA Shuts Down 25 Facilities For Environmental Violations
The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has shut down 25 facilities across four states in Nigeria for various environmental crimes.
The affected facilities are located in Anambra, Enugu, Bayelsa, and Rivers States.
The companies that were sealed off operate in various industries, including construction, energy and utilities, manufacturing, logistics and shipping, real estate, dredging, and a medical company.
The facilities include Rugal Pharmaceutical, Emene Industrial Layout, Enugu; China Communication Construction Company (CCCC), Owo yard, Enugu; Planet Project Holy Ghost Central park, Enugu; Planet Project Garriki Central Project, Enugu; Reinforce Global Construction Company Ltd, Enugu-Abakaliki Fly-Over; Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, Okpara Avenue, Enugu; Tanit Medical Engineering Ltd, Enugu International Hospital Project; Mil House Energy Services Ltd and Awhum Village, Enugu State.
Others include Hardis and Dromedas, Umunya, Anambra State; Pinnatech Engi Asphalt Plant, Awkuzu, Anambra State; Fadon Bonded Terminal, Onitsha –Enugu Express Way, Anambra State; Merit Bonded Terminal, Nawfia, Anambra State; Zenith Shipping Company, Nawfia, Anambra State; Donclimax Bonded Terminals, Amawbia, Anambra State; Ikenga Shopping Mall, Nkpor, Anambra State; Reliable Steel and Plastic Limited, Onitsha, Anambra State, and ILed Bonded Terminals, Oyi, Anambra State.
Some other companies include China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), Obogoro Road, Swali, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State; Megastar Technical and Construction Company Limited, Imiringi Road, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State; Azikel Dredging Company, Obogoro Road, Swali, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State; Monier Construction Company (MCC) Nigeria Limited, Igbogene, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State; Raycon & Co. Nig. Ltd, Imiringi Community, Ogbia LGA, Bayelsa State (Construction Admin Office and Dredging Site); Abili Integrated Services Ltd, Imiringi Community, Ogbia LGA, Bayelsa State; and Multi Plan Nigeria Limited, Okuru-Ama, Trans-Amadi Industrial Layout, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
According to NESREA in a statement signed by the agency’s Assistant Director (Press), Nwamaka Ejiofor, the facilities were shut down for various environmental crimes, including refusal to conduct Environmental Impact Assessment before commencement of project, Environmental Audit, and lack of functional effluent treatment plant, among others.
The agency’s Director General, Prof. Innocent Barikor, urged operators to adhere to the provisions of environmental laws in their operations to avoid being sanctioned and their organisation being sealed.
He assured that NESREA will continue to carry out enforcement exercises to safeguard the environment and serve as a deterrent to facility operators.
