Khadga Prasad Oli, Prime Minister of Nepal on Tuesday announced his resignation from office following violent protests in many parts of the country.

The protesters earlier on Tuesday set government offices and homes of the prime minister and some other government officials ablaze over a policy banning social media in the country.

Oli resigned alongside several lawmakers, who were directly affected by the ongoing protests.

The resignations came a day after security agents reportedly opened fire into crowds of young protesters, leaving at least 19 people dead.

Local reports and videos shared on social media on Tuesday showed protesters attacking residences of the top political leaders in and around Kathmandu.

A curfew was earlier imposed in the capital and other cities to curtail further destruction of government and private properties.

It was gathered that all schools in Kathmandu have also been shut down.
